What does it mean to see God behind the scriptures? Often times, we have been taught to read scripture with the mindset of "what is God trying to say to me"? What instruction is He giving me in this scripture? But, how often do we sit and read to search out the attributes of Christ? To see God, His heart and His soul through each verse that we read. When reading scripture, read it in a way to get to know the character of the God behind each verse. When we read scripture with the mindset of where is the heart of God in this verse? What characteristic is He showing me here, the more likely we are to follow what His Word says.
Understanding who God is makes it that much easier to submit to Him. It is hard to submit to someone you do not know on a personal basis, especially when they ask difficult things of you. But when you know the person, you have spent time with that person, you have shared your heart with that person and visa versa, it is much easier to submit. Obedience becomes our natural response. Last month's blog we talked about the difference between hearing and listening. When we read each verse and look beyond the words that we see and aim to see the God who spoke each word from the bottom of His heart, the transition from hearing to listening is seamless.
There is so much we can learn about Christ when we take this perspective when reading scripture. Let's take a look at some scripture and see what they reveal about God.
1 My child, listen to what I say,
and treasure my commands.
2 Tune your ears to wisdom,
and concentrate on understanding.
3 Cry out for insight,
and ask for understanding.
4 Search for them as you would for silver;
seek them like hidden treasures.
5 Then you will understand what it means to fear the Lord,
and you will gain knowledge of God.- Proverbs 2:1-5 (NLT)
In this short passage of scripture I can see God's instructions to us. He asks of us: to listen to what He says, to concentrate on understanding, to cry out for insight, and that is just to name a few. As I read this passage verse by verse, line by line I saw a God who was fatherly, He starts the passage off with "My child". A God who cares, who was concerned for our well being, a God who gives advice; a counselor, a God who has our best interest at heart. This God is not bossy, angry or someone who just likes to place a lot of rules on us. He is a God who cares very much about the one reading the scripture.
Let's look at another scripture.
5 Now Abraham was one hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. 6 And Sarah said, “God has made me laugh, and all who hear will laugh with me.”- Genesis 21:5-6 (NKJV)
In this verse we see the promise of God and then we see a God who is faithful, a God who finds joy in the blessings of His children. Not only that but we see a God who turns our mourning into laughter, who went as far as to name the child laughter after so many years and tears of waiting. Sarah says in this passage "and all who hear will laugh with me". This laughter was not just for this moment but for many more to come. Our God is a God of joy and laughter.
Brothers and Sister, as you begin to seek out and explore God through His Word, I pray that the eyes of your heart will be enlightened. That wisdom, knowledge and understanding would be bestowed upon you. As you read, ask yourself "What do I see or rather who do I see? You are loved.
Viendo A Nuestro Dios Detrás De Las Escrituras
¿Qué significa ver a Dios detrás de las escrituras? A menudo, se nos ha enseñado a leer las Escrituras con la mentalidad de "¿qué está tratando de decirme Dios?". ¿Qué instrucción me está dando Él en esta escritura? Pero, ¿con qué frecuencia nos sentamos y leemos para buscar los atributos de Cristo? Ver a Dios, Su corazón y Su alma a través de cada versículo que leemos. Al leer las Escrituras, léalas de manera que conozca el carácter del Dios detrás de cada versículo. Cuando leemos las Escrituras con la mentalidad de ¿dónde está el corazón de Dios en este versículo? Qué característica me está mostrando Él aquí, es más probable que sigamos lo que dice Su Palabra.
Entender quién es Dios hace que sea mucho más fácil someterse a Él. Es difícil someterse a alguien que no conoces personalmente, especialmente cuando te piden cosas difíciles. Pero cuando conoces a la persona, has pasado tiempo con esa persona, has compartido tu corazón con esa persona y viceversa, es mucho más fácil someterse. La obediencia se convierte en nuestra respuesta natural. En el blog del mes pasado hablamos sobre la diferencia entre oír y escuchar. Cuando leemos cada versículo y miramos más allá de las palabras que vemos y aspiramos a ver al Dios que pronunció cada palabra desde el fondo de Su corazón, la transición de oír a escuchar es perfecta.
Hay mucho que podemos aprender acerca de Cristo cuando tomamos esta perspectiva al leer las Escrituras. Echemos un vistazo a algunas escrituras y veamos lo que revelan acerca de Dios.
1 Hijo mío, presta atención a lo que digo
y atesora mis mandatos.
2 Afina tus oídos a la sabiduría
y concéntrate en el entendimiento.
3 Clama por inteligencia
y pide entendimiento.
4 Búscalos como si fueran plata,
como si fueran tesoros escondidos.
5 Entonces comprenderás lo que significa temer al Señor
y obtendrás conocimiento de Dios.- Proverbios 2:1-5 (NVT)
En este breve pasaje de las Escrituras puedo ver las instrucciones de Dios para nosotros. Él nos pide: que escuchemos lo que Él dice, que nos concentremos en comprender, que clamemos por discernimiento, y eso es solo por nombrar algunos. Mientras leía este pasaje verso por verso, línea por línea, vi a un Dios que era paternal, Él comienza el pasaje con "Mi hijo". Un Dios que cuida, que se preocupó por nuestro bienestar, un Dios que da consejos; un consejero, un Dios que tiene nuestro mejor interés en el corazón. Este Dios no es mandón, enojado o alguien a quien simplemente le gusta ponernos muchas reglas. Él es un Dios que se preocupa mucho por el que lee la escritura.
Veamos otra escritura.
5 Y era Abraham de cien años cuando nació Isaac su hijo. 6 Entonces dijo Sara: Dios me ha hecho reír, y cualquiera que lo oyere, se reirá conmigo. - Génesis 21:5-6 (Reina-Valera 1960)
En este versículo vemos la promesa de Dios y luego vemos a un Dios que es fiel, un Dios que encuentra gozo en las bendiciones de Sus hijos. No sólo eso sino que vemos a un Dios que convierte nuestro duelo en risa, que llegó a ponerle al niño el nombre de risa después de tantas años y lágrimas de espera. Sarah dice en este pasaje "y todos los que oigan se reirán conmigo". Esta risa no era solo para este momento sino para muchos más por venir. Nuestro Dios es un Dios de alegría y risa.
Hermanos y hermanas, mientras comienzan a buscar y explorar a Dios a través de Su Palabra, oro para que los ojos de su corazón sean iluminados. Que la sabiduría, el conocimiento y la comprensión se os concedan. Mientras lees, pregúntate "¿Qué veo o más bien a quién veo? Eres amado.
