Hearing and listening can often be interpreted as one in the same. Most people have the ability to hear, in fact we can even be selective with what we hear. But, unless we decide to stop, pause and think about what we just heard, it will not stick or resonate with us. Listening on the other hand requires follow through, engaging more than just our ears, but our hearts and minds too. When we listen, we clear our minds to receive.
Listen to the Parable of the Farmer and the 4 types of soil that he planted the seed in.
3 He told many stories in the form of parables, such as this one:
“Listen! A farmer went out to plant some seeds. 4 As he scattered them across his field, some seeds fell on a footpath, and the birds came and ate them. 5 Other seeds fell on shallow soil with underlying rock. The seeds sprouted quickly because the soil was shallow. 6 But the plants soon wilted under the hot sun, and since they didn’t have deep roots, they died. 7 Other seeds fell among thorns that grew up and choked out the tender plants. 8 Still other seeds fell on fertile soil, and they produced a crop that was thirty, sixty, and even a hundred times as much as had been planted! 9 Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.”
12 To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given, and they will have an abundance of knowledge. But for those who are not listening, even what little understanding they have will be taken away from them.
18 “Now listen to the explanation of the parable about the farmer planting seeds: 19 The seed that fell on the footpath represents those who hear the message about the Kingdom and don’t understand it. Then the evil one comes and snatches away the seed that was planted in their hearts. 20 The seed on the rocky soil represents those who hear the message and immediately receive it with joy. 21 But since they don’t have deep roots, they don’t last long. They fall away as soon as they have problems or are persecuted for believing God’s word. 22 The seed that fell among the thorns represents those who hear God’s word, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries of this life and the lure of wealth, so no fruit is produced. 23 The seed that fell on good soil represents those who truly hear and understand God’s word and produce a harvest of thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times as much as had been planted!”- Matthew 13: 3-9,12, 18-23 (NLT)
Hearing from God or what His word says is not enough, but when we hear and have understanding it causes us to listen (obey) and receive all that He has for us. It moves us to action. As we can see in this passage the problem is not the seed which is Jesus Christ but with the ground (our hearts) on which the seed fell. When we hear what is being said to us and listen, there will be evidence. But there will be those individuals who will hear the same word and never listen to what is being said or asked of them. Therefore never having any change in their lives or circumstances. When we listen we inevitably become doers of His word (James 1:22) and leave the foolishness behind.
Here is a little scenario that I am sure everyone of us is familiar with, whether from our childhood view or from now a parents view...
Parent: If you appreciate the things you have then you would take care of them. Do you understand sweetie.
Child: Yes (Child goes and begins drawing on their doll or throwing their cars across the room).
Parent: Did you hear what I just said?
Child: Yes, I heard you.
Parent: Then why aren't you listening?
Brothers and sisters.... Are you listening to what our Heavenly Father is saying to you or are you just hearing Him? I encourage you today to make an effort, take a little more time in His presence, focus a little more on the words that you read in scripture and listen to what God is saying to you. You will be amazed how He begins to move in your life once you do. You are loved.

Oír vs Escuchar
Oír y escuchar a menudo se pueden interpretar como uno en lo mismo. La mayoría de las personas tienen la capacidad de escuchar, de hecho, incluso podemos ser selectivos con lo que escuchamos. Pero, a menos que decidamos detenernos, hacer una pausa y pensar en lo que acabamos de escuchar, no se quedará con nosotros ni se resignará. Escuchar, por otro lado, requiere seguimiento, comprometiendo más que solo nuestros oídos, sino también nuestros corazones y mentes. Cuando escuchamos, despejamos nuestras mentes para recibir.
Escuche la parábola del agricultor y los 4 tipos de tierra en los que plantó la semilla.
3 Contó muchas historias en forma de parábola como la siguiente:
«¡Escuchen! Un agricultor salió a sembrar. 4 A medida que esparcía las semillas por el campo, algunas cayeron sobre el camino y los pájaros vinieron y se las comieron. 5 Otras cayeron en tierra poco profunda con roca debajo de ella. Las semillas germinaron con rapidez porque la tierra era poco profunda; 6 pero pronto las plantas se marchitaron bajo el calor del sol y, como no tenían raíces profundas, murieron. 7 Otras semillas cayeron entre espinos, los cuales crecieron y ahogaron los brotes; 8 pero otras semillas cayeron en tierra fértil, ¡y produjeron una cosecha que fue treinta, sesenta y hasta cien veces más numerosa de lo que se había sembrado! 9 El que tenga oídos para oír, que escuche y entienda».
12 A los que escuchan mis enseñanzas se les dará más comprensión, y tendrán conocimiento en abundancia; pero a los que no escuchan se les quitará aun lo poco que entiendan.
18 "Escuchen ahora la explicación de la parábola acerca del agricultor que salió a sembrar: 19 Las semillas que cayeron en el camino representan a los que oyen el mensaje del reino y no lo entienden. Entonces viene el maligno y arrebata la semilla que fue sembrada en el corazón. 20 Las semillas sobre la tierra rocosa representan a los que oyen el mensaje y de inmediato lo reciben con alegría; 21 pero, como no tienen raíces profundas, no duran mucho. En cuanto tienen problemas o son perseguidos por creer la palabra de Dios, caen. 22 Las semillas que cayeron entre los espinos representan a los que oyen la palabra de Dios, pero muy pronto el mensaje queda desplazado por las preocupaciones de esta vida y el atractivo de la riqueza, así que no se produce ningún fruto. 23 Las semillas que cayeron en la buena tierra representan a los que de verdad oyen y entienden la palabra de Dios, ¡y producen una cosecha treinta, sesenta y hasta cien veces más numerosa de lo que se había sembrado!"- Mateo 13:3-9, 12, 18-23 (NTV)
Escuchar a Dios o lo que dice Su palabra no es suficiente, pero cuando escuchamos y tenemos entendimiento, nos hace escuchar (obedecer) y recibir todo lo que Él tiene para nosotros. Nos mueve a la acción. Como podemos ver en este pasaje el problema no es la semilla que es Jesucristo sino la tierra (nuestros corazones) sobre la cual cayó la semilla. Cuando oigamos lo que se nos dice y escuchamos, habrá evidencia. Pero habrá individuos que escuchan la misma palabra y nunca escucharán lo que se les dice o se les pide. Por lo tanto nunca teniendo ningún cambio en sus vidas o circunstancias. Cuando escuchamos, inevitablemente nos convertimos en hacedores de Su palabra (Santiago 1:22) y dejamos atrás la necedad.
Aquí hay un pequeño escenario con el que estoy seguro que todos estamos familiarizados, ya sea desde nuestra infancia o desde ahora como padres...
Padre: Si aprecias las cosas que tienes, las cuidarás. ¿Entiendes cariño?
Niño (a): Sí (Él niño (a) va y los seres dibujan en su muñeca o tiran sus carros por la habitación).
Padre: ¿Escuchaste lo que acabo de decir?
Niño (a): Sí, te escuché.
Padre: ¿Entonces por qué no estás escuchando?
Hermanos y hermanas... ¿Están oyendo lo que nuestro Padre Celestial les está diciendo o simplemente lo están escuchando? Ten ánimo y hagan un esfuerzo, pasen un poco más de tiempo en Su presencia, concentrarte un poco más en las palabras que lees en las Escrituras y escuchar lo que Dios te está diciendo. Te sorprenderá cómo Él comienza a moverse en tu vida una vez que lo hagas. Eres amado.
