Get Up and Pray!

³¹ “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat. ³² But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. So, when you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen your brothers.”

³⁹ Then, accompanied by the disciples, Jesus left the upstairs room and went as usual to the Mount of Olives. ⁴⁰ There he told them, “Pray that you will not give in to temptation.”

⁴⁵ At last he stood up again and returned to the disciples, only to find them asleep, exhausted from grief. ⁴⁶ “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation.”

Peter and the other disciples were just dinning together with the King of Kings and Lord of Lords before Jesus tells Peter that Satan has asked to sift them. Considering that they were just with the Lord, you would think that spiritually and physically they would be strong enough to resist any temptation that comes their way. I mean, some of us feel like that at times. Sometimes after a great prayer session or a Holy Ghost filled service, we feel we can take on anything. Yet, out of nowhere temptation comes, and we only see it once it has smacked us in the face and boom… we fall prey again. I know most of us in that moment think to ourselves “how could this happen; I was just with the Lord”? Truth is that the enemy is always lurking around to seek whom he can devour and most times when we come from spending time with the Lord it is when we let our guard down making it easy for the enemy to have access to us. Jesus gives Peter a heads up and instruction- “Get Up and Pray so that you will not give in to temptation”.  

Jesus prays for Peter and His disciples. Jesus knew that Peter would be tempted, He knew Peter would fall. Jesus’ response to this situation was to pray for His disciples, to ask God to strengthen them. Jesus prayed that their “faith” would not fail. We are going to go through times of tempting, trials and tribulation of many kinds The Word tells us, but we need to hold onto our faith. Our faith in the Most High will sustain us and allow us to come out on top in victory. Faith gives us the strength to push forward and persevere. Be of one mind with Christ and have the same response He did when temptation comes, which it will… “Get up and pray” until you feel that release. The Bible warns us to keep watch and pray. I have experienced times in my walk where God has woken me up in the middle of the night to pray, I am so tired and rarely want to, but my spirit man nudges me and I obey. Almost always the next day I will encounter temptation of some sort or a trial, and I find myself able to deal with it so much better than if I had not listened to the prompting of the Lord to “Get up and Pray”.

Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!”

Brothers and Sisters, stay on guard, the enemy does not take a day off, he wants you to fail. But, as Jesus did for His disciples He is doing for us. He prays for us and advocates for us; He instructs us to stay watchful and pray constantly. He is fighting for us, rooting for us and wants us to live in victory. Most importantly, when we fall, He does not want our faith to fall also. Faith in God will help us weather the storms that come. Jesus tells Peter once you have repented strengthen your brothers and sisters, I pray that this devotional finds you well and that you are encouraged. Whether you are feeling tempted or have fallen already, the response is still the same “Get up and Pray!” You are loved.

¡Levántate y Ora!

31 »Simón, Simón, Satanás ha pedido zarandear a cada uno de ustedes como si fueran trigo; 32 pero yo he rogado en oración por ti, Simón, para que tu fe no falle, de modo que cuando te arrepientas y vuelvas a mí fortalezcas a tus hermanos».

39 Luego, acompañado por sus discípulos, Jesús salió del cuarto en el piso de arriba y, como de costumbre, fue al monte de los Olivos.  Allí les dijo: «Oren para que no cedan a la tentación».

45 Finalmente se puso de pie y regresó adonde estaban sus discípulos, pero los encontró dormidos, exhaustos por la tristeza. 46 «¿Por qué duermen? les preguntó. Levántense y oren para que no cedan ante la tentación».

Pedro y los demás discípulos estaban cenando con el Rey de Reyes y Señor de Señores justo antes de que Jesús le dijera a Pedro que Satanás había pedido permiso para ponerlos a prueba. Considerando que acababan de estar con el Señor, uno pensaría que, espiritual y físicamente, serían lo suficientemente fuertes como para resistir cualquier tentación. De hecho, algunos de nosotros nos sentimos así a veces. Después de una intensa sesión de oración o de un servicio lleno del Espíritu Santo, sentimos que podemos con todo. Sin embargo, de repente llega la tentación, y solo nos damos cuenta cuando ya nos ha dado en la cara y, ¡boom!, volvemos a caer. Sé que la mayoría de nosotros en ese momento pensamos: "¿Cómo pudo pasar esto? ¡Si acababa de estar con el Señor!". La verdad es que el enemigo siempre anda al acecho, buscando a quién devorar, y la mayoría de las veces, después de pasar tiempo con el Señor, bajamos la guardia, lo que facilita que el enemigo tenga acceso a nosotros. Jesús le advierte a Pedro y le da una instrucción: "Levántate y ora para que no caigas en la tentación".

Jesús ora por Pedro y sus discípulos. Jesús sabía que Pedro sería tentado, sabía que caería. La respuesta de Jesús ante esta situación fue orar por sus discípulos, pedirle a Dios que los fortaleciera. Jesús oró para que su fe no fallan. Pasaremos por momentos de tentación, pruebas y tribulaciones de muchos tipos, como nos dice la Palabra, pero necesitamos aferrarnos a nuestra fe. Nuestra fe en el Altísimo nos sostendrá y nos permitirá salir victoriosos. La fe nos da la fuerza para seguir adelante y perseverar. Tengan la misma mentalidad que Cristo y respondan como Él lo hizo cuando llegue la tentación, que sin duda llegará… «Levántense y oren» hasta que sientan alivio. La Biblia nos advierte que estemos vigilantes y oremos. He experimentado momentos en mi vida en los que Dios me ha despertado en medio de la noche para orar; estoy muy cansada y rara vez tengo ganas, pero mi espíritu me impulsa y obedezco. Casi siempre, al día siguiente me encuentro con alguna tentación o prueba, y me doy cuenta de que puedo afrontarla mucho mejor que si no hubiera escuchado la voz del Señor que me decía: «Levántate y Ora».

41 Velen y oren para que no cedan ante la tentación, porque el espíritu está dispuesto, pero el cuerpo es débil».

Hermanos y Hermanas, manténganse alerta, el enemigo no descansa, quiere que fracasen. Pero, así como Jesús lo hizo por sus discípulos, lo está haciendo por nosotros. Ora por nosotros e intercede por nosotros; nos instruye a permanecer vigilantes y orar constantemente. Él lucha por nosotros, nos apoya y desea que vivamos en victoria. Lo más importante es que, cuando caemos, Él no quiere que nuestra fe caiga también. La fe en Dios nos ayudará a superar las tormentas que se presenten. Jesús le dijo a Pedro: «Una vez que te hayas arrepentido, fortalece a tus hermanos y hermanas». Oro para que esta reflexión les encuentre bien y les anime. Ya sea que se sientan tentados o que ya hayan caído, la respuesta sigue siendo la misma: «¡Levántense y Oren!» Eres amado.
